يحتل الأهل مكانة خاصة في الاتفاقية الدولية لحقوق الطفل إلى الحد الذي يجعل من الأهل طرفاُ وشريكاً أساسياً. ويستحيل أن تتحول حقوق الطفل إلى واقع ما لم يشارك هذا الطرف في القيام بمسئوليته بالشكل المناسب.
ورغم أن العمل مع الأهل نهج مهمّ في كل مجالات العمل على قضايا الطفولة، إلا أنه في ضوء الاتفاقية اكتسب بعدين جديدين:
الأول: حق للأهل على الحكومات في أن تقدم كل المساندة اللازمة كي يقوموا الأهل بدورهم في رعاية وحماية أطفالهم وذلك من خلال البرامج المختلفة.
الثاني: مسؤولية الأهل في أن يشاركوا في بناء وتقديم كلّ البرامج التي تقدم لأطفالهم.
ويقدم هذا الكتيب مدخلاً مهماً للعمل مع الأهل وهو مدخل حقوق الطفل. وهو يرتكز على توعية الأهل بحقوق أطفالهم، ويساعد الأهل على لعب دورهم ي أعمال هذه الحقوق. وهو يستوجب هذا الدليل العالمين الميدانيين في المؤسسات المختلفة، والذين يعملون في برامج تعمل مع الأطفال أساساً، وتعمل أيضاً مع الأهل على تحسين أوضاع أطفالهم أو تنوي ذلك. وينقسم هذا الكتيب إلى ثلاثة أجزاء:
الجزء الأول: يقدم الاتفاقية بشكل موجز مع التركيز على مسؤوليات الأهل وحقوقهم ثم ينتقل ليقدم جوانب من الواقع الذي يعيشه الأهل فيما يخص دورهم تجاه أطفالهم ودور الهيئات تجاه تدعيم الأهل وكيفية برمجة العمل مع الأهل.
الجزء الثاني: يقدم لقاءات وأنشطة مع الأهل حول مبادئ وحقوق الطفل ودور الأهل في إعمال هذه المبادئ.
الجزء الثالث يتضمن أربعة ملاحق: 1-ملخص مبسط لأساليب التعلّم النشط. 2-مبادرات نتجت عن برامج للعمل مع الأهل. 3-أسئلة تتكرر على لسان الأهل عن أطفالهم. 4-قائمة ببعض الموارد المتعلقة بالموضوع.
