يشكل هذا الإصدار تحقيق في كتاب (الجمل في النحو) لمصنعه أبو القاسم عبد الرحمن بن إسحاق الزجاجي، حققه وقدم له أ. د. / علي توفيق الحمد في نسخة جديدة وبالإستناد إلى مخطوطتين دقيقتين كاملتين لم تظهر في الطبعات الأخرى للكتاب، والغاية النهائية بالنسبة للموقف في "تسهيل أمر النحو والصرف على الطلبة والدارسين، والسعي لإفادتهم وجذبهم وتشجيعهم على إتقان لغتهم، ومعرفة أسس قواعدها...".
ولذلك، فإن كتاب الجمل يعد من كتب النحو الجامعة، فقد ضم بين دفتيه خمسة وأربعين ومئة باب، تناولت أبواب النحو والصرف والأصوات، والتأريخ، والضرورات الشعرية والرسم أو الهجاء، فهو في هذا كتاب جامع مفيد في علوم العربية.
أما عن مصادر كتاب الجمل، فقد أكثر الزجاجي فيه من الشواهد، فأورد ما يزيد على عشرين ومئة من الشواهد القرآنية، وما يزيد على ستين ومئة بيت من الشعر والرجز، ونسب أكثرها إلى قائليها، وقد أورد عدداً من الأمثال والأقوال المشهورة إضافة إلى حديثين شريفين، كما أنه أورد آراء لنحويين مشهورين من أعلام المدرستين البصرية والكوفية، وأسندها إلى أصحابها، وكان يناقشها، فيوافق بعضها، ويخالف بعضها الآخر، وربما أورد الخلافات بين البصريين والكوفيين أحياناً قليلة وذكر علماء مثل الأخفش الأكبر، والجرمي، والخليل وآخرون من أعلام العربية.
ومن ينظر في هذا الكتاب يجد نفسه أمام عالِم متمكن، يُحسن عرض موضوعاته وتناولها بأسلوب سهل واضح، خالٍ من التعقيد، مع براعة في التحليل والتعليل، مما يجعل الكتاب مناسباً لأي مستوى من المتعلمين، وفي الوقت نفسه لا يعدم المتخصصون النفع والفائدة.
