تتوجه أغلب الجامعات العربية في هذه الأيام نحو التعريب واستعمال اللغة العربية في تدريسها للمواد العلمية مما حفز العديد من العاملين في هذا المجال إلى تأليف الكتب الدراسية باللغة العربية أو ترجمة بعض الكتب الأجنبية إلى اللغة العربية.
من هذا المنطلق رأيت أن المكتبة الجيولوجية تفتقر إلى قاموس جيولوجي شامل يحتوي على أكبر عدد من المصطلحات المعربة، ويوجد حالياً معاجم وقواميس إضافة إلى بعض الاجتهادات الشخصية التي تتمثل في قائمة المصطلحات التي تدرج في آخر كل كتاب ألف أو ترجم، إلا أنها لا تغطي حاجة الباحث أو الطالب، وبتجميع هذه المراجع رأيت أنه يمكن إدراجها في قاموس واحد يشمل على عدد وفير من المصطلحات الجيولوجية، وكان نتاج هذا العمل، هذا المرجع المتواضع. الذي يحتوي على معظم المصطلحات الجيولوجية السائدة. وما يميز هذا القاموس أنه يركز على المصطلح أكثر مما يركز على الكلمة, ويسعى إلى تبسيط المصطلح وتيسير فهمه وتناوله.
