يدور موضوع الكتاب حول مفهوم أمهات المؤمنين، وما لهن وما عليهن، وبالتحديد ما جاء في حق عائشة "أم المؤمنين" وهذا الكتاب يسلط الضوء على جزء من حياتها مما ورد في أصح الكتب عند القوم وبأصح الأسانيد.
وفي الكتاب يتعرض المؤلف إلى حديث الإفك في عائشة وكيف جرى شرحه عند المفسرين، والرواة، ويقدم للقارىء مشاهداً من حياتها مع الرسول وعلاقتها بأزواجه، وبالمسلمين، على اعتبار أنها كانت راوية للحديث، إلى آخر ذلك من سيرة حياتها، حتى مرض الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ووفاته.
أما عن مصادر الأحاديث في "عفواً .. أم المؤمنين" فقد استلها المؤلف من كتاب الله العزيز "القرآن الكريم" والحديث الشريف، وتفسير الطبري والبغوي والثعلبي وإبن الجوزي والبيهقي والبيضاوي والزمخشري، ومن المعاصرين الدكتور وهبه الزحيلي وآخرون.
ولعل خير ختام كلام الله في محكم نزيه وفصل خطابه "يا أيها الذين آمنوا اجتنبوا كثيراً من الظن إن بعض الظن إثم ..." ولعلها خير آية يقرأها المسلمون في تنزيه "أم المؤمنين" عائشة عليها السلام، بدلاً من القول لها "عفواً أم المؤمنين" وللقارىء الحكم بعد الإطلاع على الكتاب.
