فقد رأى الكاتب من واجبه إعطاء فكرة ولو موجزة لقراء العربية على تاريخ هذا البطل تبرز حياته وكفاحه ومعاناته من أنظمة الميز العنصري في جنوب أفريقيا وما تعرض له من مطاردة وسجن وتعذيب من أجل قضيته الكبرى العادلة وهي إلغاء الفصل العنصري وضرورة اعتبار أهل بلاده جميعاً سواء بصرف النظر عن ألوانهم وأجناسهم ودياناتهم أو أصولهم العرقية، وذلك من أجل بناء مجتمع ديمقراطي يكفل الحرية والعدالة للجميع ولقد استعان في إعداد هذه الدراسة ببعض الكتب الصادرة في جنوب القارة الأفريقية.
وكذلك بما ورد في بعض الصحف من تقارير وأخبار عن مانديلا أو بما دوّنه هو نفسه أو ما نشر عنه من قبل رفاقه أو أصدقائه، كما أورد في هذا الكتاب بعضاً مما تحصل عليه من خلال اللقاءات الشخصية لأفراد من ذوي العلاقة بهذه الساحة.
