تسرد الروائية البحرية حكاية بطلة الرواية بواقعية وفق زمن خطي يسير إلى الأمام، يبدأ بأحلام تلك الفتاة المتفوقة التي كانت تأمل أن يوفر لها العمل حياة رغيدة بمكتب فاره يكون قريبا من البيت، إلا أن أحلامها تتلاشى بعد أن يتم تعيينها في منطقة نائية وبعيدة عن أسرتها.
تستسلم للغربة وتذهب للعيش في سكن موظفات وهناك تجتمع معها في السكن زميلتان يعملن في مهنة التعليم، لتبدأ البطلة التي أطلقت على نفسها اسم "المرآة"، بينما أطلقت على زميلتها الأخرى اسم "أحيحة" نظرا لاهتمامها بالشعر والبلاغة، وأطلقت على الثالثة اسم "مونيه" نسبة للرسام العالمي، تجربة حياتية مختلفة تبحر في حكايات الناس وتغوص في مشاعرهم وأسرارهم لتتعلم معنى التحمل والإصرار.
وخلال ذلك تعرض الكثير من المواقف والحوارات بين الفتيات اللواتي اجتمعن من مناطق مختلفة ليشكلن أسرة واحدة، ويقسمن العمل بينهن، كما تحكي البطلة عن رحلة العودة لبيتها في المسافات الطويلة التي تقطعها وحيدة مستعيدة الكثير من الحكايات التي تستعيدها من بئر الطفولة، وتصف جماليات المكان وتضاريسه.
