يتضمن الكتاب مكاتبات الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) كتّابه من الصحابة رضي الله عنه، وما يتعلق بذلك من فوائد، كوفييات بعض من وقع ذكره من الصحابة، وابتداء إسلامه، وما يحتاج إلى بيانه من غريب لغة أو نادرة تتعلق ببعض مراسلاته (صلى الله عليه وسلم) إلى ملوك الأرض وغيره، ممن آمن به ومن لم يؤمن به، وقد تم للمصنف استخراج ذلك من دواوين كثيرة وبطرق متعددة، إذ انه وجد في كل طريق منها فائدة لم تتضمنها الأخرى بالإضافة إلى ذلك ذكر المؤلف ما ظهر من خضوع ملوك الأرض له (صلى الله عليه وسلم) مع عظيم سلطانهم، وكثرة عساكرهم وأتباعهم، وإقرارهم له بالرسالة وتواضعهم له، عازياً كل ما أورده إلى من ذكره من العلماء أصحاب المصنفات المشهورة، واسماً كتابه بـ"المصباح المضيء في كتاب النبي الأمي ورسله إلى ملوك الأرض من عربي وعجمي" ومرتباً مادته ضمن قسمين: القسم الأول في كتابه، والقسم الثاني في رسله ومكاتباته إلى الملوك (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، مرتباً أسماء الصحابة على حروف المعجم بعد ذكر الخلفاء الأربعة رضي الله عنهم.
