تقدم المؤلفة في هذا الكتاب التحليل النفسي والإجتماعي لتأثير الجماعات على وعي الأفراد في كتاب "حاضر ومستقبل" لكارل غوستاف يونج، حيث يعتقد يونج أن في تاريخ الشعوب قوىً وصوراً لحياة قديمة إذا ما أوقِظَت تعود بصورتها البدائية الشرسة التي تعتقد أن الحضارة قد ألغتها.
ويرى أن العالم اليوم يتعرَّض لإستثارة هذه القوى في الجماهير الغوغائية والجماعات المطيَّفة والمسيسة التي غالباً ما تفرز زعيماً يتخفّى وراء ستار من المحترمية والأخلاقية، ليأخذ صورة الأقنوم المقدّس، ولا يلبث ان يحوِّل الحكم إلى الإستبدادية فرديّة والإستبدادية في جوهرها لا أخلاقية.
وعندما يعلق الفرد داخل هذه الجماعات يتضاءل وعيه وتُلغى فرادته وقراره الحر، ويتحوّل إلى مجرّد رقم في معادلة إحصائية، لكن لن تربح، في رأي يونج، نظرية سياسية أو إجتماعية من هذه الجموع المخدَّرة، لذلك أصبح ملحاً اليوم التصدي لظاهرة الجماعات، سياسية كانت أم طائفية أم حزبية.
الجماعة تهدد الفرد! هذه هي القضية التي شغلت هذا الفيلسوف في أواخر حياته حتى أن كثيرين اعتبروا أن كتاب "حاضر ومستقبل" الذي يبحث فيه يونج علاقة الفرد داخل الجماعات المنظمة، كأن وكأنه الوصية.
