الدروز يشكلون واحدة من طوائف الشرق الأوسط الأكثر جاذبية، وكان الطابع السرّي لمذهبهم عبر الزمن الطويل مصدراً لتخيلات الرحالة الغربيين، كما سيقت بحقهم الإتهامات والإنتقادات من قبل جيرانهم العرب من الطوائف الأخرى، مسيحيين ومسلمين.
يتوزع إنتشار الدروز اليوم بين لبنان وسوريا والكيان الإسرائيلي، فيثير وضعهم بعض التساؤل، سياسياً، بإعتبار أنهم نأوا بأنفسهم عن المطالب ذات الطابع القومي الخاص بهم، وطورت كل جماعة موقفاً تميزت فيه عن الأخرى حيال الدولة التي ينخرطون فيها.
وهذا البحث يجدد آفاق الدراسات المكرسة للأقليات الدينية في الشرق الأوسط التي تبين كيف أن بالإمكان تكوين خصوصية والإستمرار في المحافظة عليها من دون المطالبة، سياسياً، بهوية قومية على قاعدة دينية، وهو يتناول العلاقات بين الشأنين السياسي والديني داخل هذه الطائفة مشدداً على عدم فصل بسيط ولا تداخل كامل في آن بين هذين الميدانين، إنما هناك أشكال من الترابط تتلون بلون مستوى الواقع الذي تتمظهر فيها.
ولئن كان ثمة تمايز بين رجال السياسة ورجال الدين على المستوى المحلّي، إلاّ أن القيادة الروحية وحدها تلعب دوراً سياسياً ودينياً في آن ويعود إليها صلاحية تعيين حدود الجماعة وتولي مهمة توجيهها.
