لقد قال محمد عبده بالعديد من الأفكار لكى تبقى وتظل بيننا على امتداد العصور والزمان, ولم يقل بما قال به لكى يوضع فى زوايا النسيان والإهمال, ألا يكفيه فخرا الجرأه التى تميز بها, والمعارك التى خاضها؟ ألا يكفيه فخرا أنه كان مدركا للدور الحقيقي للمثقف, وكيف ان المثقف لا يكون مقتصرا على الدرس الأكاديمى, بل لابد من أن يضيف إلى ذلك اهتماما بالمشكلات الاجتماعية والفكرية التى تهم بلده من جهة, وسائر البلدان الأخرى من جهة أخرى.
تميز الشيخ محمد عبده بالحس النقدى. ولم يكن مجرد عارض لأفكار من سبقوه, كعارض الأزياء, بل إنه كان يلجأ إلى التحليل والمقارنة والموازنة تعبيرا عن إيمانه بالنقد ودوره الخلاق فى صياغة وتشكيل العقل والوجدان. نجد هذا فى أكثر الكتب والرسائل التى تركها لنا, ومن بينها رسالة التوحيد, والإسلام والرد على منتقديه, والإسلام دين العلم والمدنية, والعديد من الفتاوى التى قال بها, والتى كان اكثرها فى زمانه بيعد فتحا جديدا, وطريقا للتقدم إلى الإمام.
وانطلاقا من المعانى العديدة التى أشرنا إليها, وإدراكا لأهميتة فكر الشيخ محمد عبده, واعتقادا بأننا فى أمس الحاجة إلى الاستفادة من دروس الإمام محمد عبده, فقد رأت لجنة الفلسفة والاجتماع بالمجلس الأعلى للثقافة, ضرورة إصدار كتاب تذكارى عن الشيخ محمد عبده فى مناسبة مرور تسعين عاما على وفاته.
فكان هذا العمل وإخراجه إلى حياة النور وقد شارك فيه مجموعة كبيرة من المؤلفين والأساتذة والزملاء والذين أدركوا أهمية أفكار الرجل ودوره الرائد والحيوى. وكتب كل أستاذ وباحث فى مجال من مجالات اهتمام الشيخ محمد عبده, وما أكثر تلك المجالات.
