"المطرفية" فرقة دينية إسلامية ظهرت في اليمن، وهي قريبة في معتقداتها من "البلخية المعتزلة" وفي كثير من المسائل الكلامية، وهيت سري في نهجها، تمضي في تيارها، ومن الطبيعي أن يجري عليها ما جرى على "الفكر المعتزلي البلخي" ضمن الفكر الزيدي الهادوي نفسه. ويقول المؤلف أن ما جرى على "البلخية" كان نوعاً من الإكبار، وفي أسوأ الأحوال النقد، فلماذا لم تجر على المطرفية الموازين والأحكام نفسها؟ من هذا المنطلق كان لا بد من البحث في قضية المطرفية، ليس من خلال ما حدث، وإنما من خلال فكرها كفكر مجرد بعيد عن إيحاء مسبّق.
وفكر المطرفية إنما هو فكر علمي إيماني يبحث عن الإيمان في أحلى صوره، ويريد أن يتصل بالله عن طريق العقل المستبصر في الحدود المتاحة له. و"حوار عن المطرفية، الفكر والمأساة" هو الثاني في سلسلة "كتاب المسار"، والغاية منه نشر الفكر العلمي بما يحمل من تشائم وأعاصير وقد اقتصر هذا الكتاب على الحوار حول جانب من الفكر المطرفي. ومن ثم فالمؤلف يفصل فيه بين الفكر وبين الحكم على ما حدث، كي لا يجده ذلك بعيداً عن دراسة هذا الفكر. لأن ما يهمه من هذا الموضوع هو الفكر المطرفي نفسه وأشخاصه بحيز فكرهم. وغاية الباحث في تعرضه لفكر المطرفية هو إيقاظ الفكر العلمي في سباته. فالمطرفية هم رموز هذا الفكر بدون شك، ولا يمكن للفكر العلي أن يستيقظ إلا إذا تمّ استرجاع الفكر المطرفي من الإبعاد القسري والنفي الإجباري.
