أحب العرب الموسيقى، واشتهر منهم موسيقيون ومغنون كبار. وأبدعوا ألحناً جميلة، واستنبطوا نظماً خاصةً لتدوينها، مستعينين بالرموز، بحيث يشير كل رمز منها إلى صوت معين أو نغمة محددة. ولكنه كان نظاماً معقداً فلم يثبت. وصار تكرار غناء اللحن الواحد يعتمد على الأذن والذاكرة. وتعرضت الألحان الأصلية للتشويش والضياع.
أهمل الموسيقيون العرب نظامهم القديم للتدوين الموسيقي حوالي ألف سنة لصعوبته. وحتى اواخر القرن التاسع عشر لم يكونوا قد تعرفوا إلى التدوين الموسيقي الغربي الحديث وتعلموه. ولكن ما إن انتصف القرن العشرون حتى كان جميع الموسيقيين العرب قد ادركوا فوائد هذا التدوين وأقبلوا على إستعماله للمحافظة على ألحانهم كما هي في الحقيقة والأصل.
فكيف حصل هذا التطور وتحقق هذا الإنقلاب؟
