إن كثيراً من المؤرخين، وأصحاب الرحلات والجغرافيين، قديماً وحديثاً، ذكروا بعض البُلدان العربية مُفرّقة في كتب عربية وأفرنجية، يصعب على كثير من المواطنين معرفتُها، خصوصاً في العصور الأخيرة، حيث أنشئت قرى جديدة، واستحالت بعض القرى إلى مدن، واستبحر عمران المدن، واتسع محيطها.
وقد أتاحت لي فرصة وجودي في ليبيا أن أتجوّل فيها غرباً وشرقاً وجنوباً في رحلات كثيرة، وأن أشاهد كثيراً من أوديتها ورُباها، وجبالها وسُهولها، وعامرها وغامرها، وأن أشاهد كثيراً مما تركه الروم واليونان والبربر من أطلال القصور وخرائب الدور المنتشرة في بطون الصحراء والأودية، وعلى مجاري المياه وسفوح الجبال، وأن أرى كثيراً من مدنها وقراها، وأن أتعرّف على كثير من سكانها مما جعلني أفكر في كتابة مُعجم للبُلدان الليبية.
فجمعت ما أمكنني جمعه، وعرّفت جميع المدن وبعض القرى تعريفاً مختصراً موضحاً، وأرّخت للمشهورة منها سواء كانت موجودة قبل الفتح الإسلامي، أو وجدت بعده.
وأعتقد أن هذا المُعجم يصوّر ليبيا تصويراً يسهل على من لم يعرفها أن يتصوّرها كما لو كان فيها، ومن خلاله يُمكن معرفة كثير من تلك الوقائع الحمر التي خاضها الشعب الليبي مع الطليان مدة عشرين سنة، دفاعاً عن وطنه، وذوداً عن كرامته.
