Dan la nuit du 26 au 27 mars 1996, sept moines trappistes sont enleves de leur monastere situe au coeur le l'Atlas.
Les cinquante-six jours de leur detention, puis l'annonce de leur mort, suscitent un grant emoi aussi bien en Algerie qu'a l'etranger. Quand bien meme ces religieux ont estime, en 1993, que leur vie pouvait etre serieusement menacee par le GIA, ils n'ont jamais songe a quitter Tibhirine, le lieu ou ils vivaient en toute quietude, partageant les espoirs et les inquietudes des gens de la montagne. La question qui revenait de temps a autre etait la suivante: partir ou rester?
Encourages par la resistance des algeriens, les moines de Tibhirine etaient a l'image des autres chretiens qui ont refuse de quitter l'Algerie a un moment ou le pays connaissait un terrorisme d'une rare intensite.
Au-dela de ce qui s'est passe au monastere de Tibhirine, en fait c'est toute la presence de l'Eglise qui revient en surface, avec son passe colonial et sa place aujourd'hui.
