في هذا الكتاب تناول الدكتور حيدر لازم مطلك موضوع "الزمان والمكان" في شعر أبي الطيب المتنبي، فبنى دراسته على اتجاه تحليلي فني لاستخلاص النتائج النظرية من خلال استقراء الشعر المكرّس لهذه الظاهرة ومناقشته وتقديمه في نطاق التتبع الزمني للقصائد وظروف إنشادها.
تتألف الدراسة من مقدمة انصرفت إلى استعراض قيمة الزمان والمكان في الفكر واللغة والأدب، وانتهت إلى استخلاص مفهوم، واقعي للزمان وعلاقته بالمكان، من خلال فهم المتنبي له، وما يطرح الشعر من أساليب ومعانٍ.
وأما الفصل الأول: وهو بعنوان (مواقف المتنبي من الزمان) فاقتصر على دراسة الموقف الفكري الخاص من الزمان، أي العصر ومشاكله... بينما تحدث الفصل الثاني عن الجانب التأملي في وصف الزمان ومشكلاته، من خلال أهم القضايا الأزلية وهي: الدهر والليل، والحياة، والموت، بمحاولة لرص اثر هذه القضايا في وعي المتنبي، ومدى ارتباطها بالزمن الفاني ... وتكفل الفصل الثالث بموضوع (الزمان وفن المديح) على جهة التخصيص، يكون المديح يشغل القسم الأكبر من الديوان، ويمتد فيه الزمان امتداداً واسعاً ... وجاء الفصل الرابع بعنوان (وحدة الموضوع في الزمان والمكان) وهو حصيلة ما تمخض عن شعر المتنبي من ارتباط بالمكان فكرياً وفنياً، وما نتج عنهما من ظواهر وسمات وأواصر مشتركة ... وبهذا العمل أراد المؤلف إقامة الدليل على أن الزمان والمكان من الظواهر الأدبية الكبرى، وهي جديرة بالعناية والدرس لاستكشاف ملامح الفكر الإنساني فيها، فضلاً عن كونها غوراً فنياً ثراً. ولهذا اتجه المؤلف بالدراسة لتحديد هذه المعالم الفنية للظاهرة المدروسة في شعر المتنبي (المكان والزمان)، توصلاً إلى وضع أسس جديدة لفهم أبعادها واستكناه دلالاتها.
