يسجل "معجم الأفعال المماتة" للدكتور حيدر السويدي عناية اصحاب اللغة بجمع المفردات وتقسيمها إلى الإسم والفعل والحرف والظرف وما يتداخل بينهما من صِيغ، ويعتبر أن الخليل كان من روّاد العلماء الذين دوّنوا هذه اللغة، إذ ابتكر بعقليته الرياضياتية طريقة التقليب لاحصائها مستنداً إلى أصول الكلمات من الثنائي إلى الثلاثي والرباعي والخماسي ثم المزيد.
وأقام الخليل حدوداً لهذه الطريقة في وضع الألفاظ وترتيبها، فاعتمد مخرج الحرف الأول ثم الثاني والثالث والرابع والخامس، ثم رتّب الكلمات داخل هذه الأبواب مبيّناً المستعمل والمهمل وهو أول من صرّح بهذين المصطلحين في اللغة.
هذا التتبع للغة جعل مصطلحي الإستعمال والإهمال يولّدان مصطلحات أخرى لدى العلماء، كالمتروك والممات والمنكر، وهي في حقيقتها تمثل مرحلة من مراحل اللغة؛ فليس كل متروك قد استمر على تركه، ولا المُمات يبقى على إماتته، والمُنكر على إنكاره: فقد يعاد المتروك ويُبعث المُمات من جديد وقد يستأنس بالمُنكر.
وفي هذا المعجم حاول المؤلف أن يجمع الألفاظ التي نُعتت بالمماتة في مرحلة من مراحل الجمع اللغوي في القرن الرابع للهجرة، وتتبع شواهدها في المدة الزمنية السابقة لهذا التاريخ من خلال الشاهد الشعري، فوجد أكثرها مستعملاً قبل هذا التاريخ وبعده. وقد اعتمد معجم الجمهرة لابن دريد وقارنه ببعض المعجمات السابقة له واللاحقة عليه. وقد رتّب الأفعال هجائياً / ألفبائياً للتسهيل، مع بيان بعض الأسباب التي قالها صاحب الجمهرة في إماتة هذه الألفاظ.
