درس في بريسلاو، وماربورغ، وميونخ.
حصل على الدكتوراه الأولى بإشراف بول ناتورب Natorp، وعلى الدكتوراه المؤهلة للتدريس في الجامعة بإشراف هيدغر في جامعة ماربورغ سنة 1929، وصار أستاذ كرسي للفلسفة في جامعة لايبتسغ سنة 1939، ثم انتقل إلى جامعة فرانكفورت في سنة 1943، فإلى جامعة هيدلبرغ في سنة 1949.
وقد شغل منذ 1953 منصب رئاسة تحرير المجلة الفلسفية.

في هذا الكتاب - الذي عدَّه هيدغر أعلى منزلةً حتى من كتابِ الحقيقة والمنهج - يجري تطبيقُ التأويلية، أو ممارسة الفعلِ التأويليّ، على الشعر.
وفيه يدنو غادامير من شعرِ بأول تسيلان دُنوّاً تأويلياً خاصّاً، إنه دُنُوٌّ من قصائدَ بعينها خاطبتْه يوماً ما وعاد إليها بفعلِ الإثارةِ ليخاطبَنا نحن القراء عبرها.
يَضُمُّ هذا الكتابُ مقاليْن آخريْن، وهما: "المعنى وإختفاءُ المعنى في شعرِ باول تسيلان"، و"مقتربٌ ظاهراتيٌّ ودلاليٌّ إلى شعرِ تسيلان" ومقدمة طويلة بعنوان "تذكُّر اللغة: مدخل إلى شِعريَّة غادامير" كتبها جيرالد ل. برونس. وزادت هذه الترجمةُ العربيةُ عليه بترجمة خطابِ تسيلان المعنون ميريديان.
