أتستطيع ريشة فنان أن تبرز في صورة تخرجها لميسالين الشهوة الجامحة والإرادة المستبدة والسلطة التي لا يحصرها نطاق؟ وأي فنان يمكنه أن يبعث الوجه المستدير، والعينين الساحرتين.
ترك لنا المؤرخون الأقدمون صوراً لميسالين تبدو فيها بفم شهواني على استعداد للأكل والعض والصراخ، وبشعر غزير تجاوز الحدود المألوفة ليغطي معظم الجبين. وسجلت لها التواريخ تفننها في انتقاء العطور وفي تركيبها، وعنيت بوصف المرايا التي كانت مثبتة في جدران قاعات قصرها، وبتعداد حفلات الاستحمام التي كانت تقيمها يومياً ويشهدها عشاقها وأصدقاؤهم.
وقد روى واحد من هؤلاء العشاق في مذكراته أن ميسالين كانت معشاقة من الطراز الأول، جعلت محاسنها نهباً لكل طارق.
ونحن لا نعرف عن ميسالين أكثر مما أراد المؤرخون المعاصرون لها أن يقولوا لنا. وقد أغفل هؤلاء ذكر الدافع الحقيقي إلى تهتكهما. أرتاها أكثرت من العشاق لتشبع نهمها، أن أنها كانت تنشد في صفوفهم الرجل الذي يملأ العين والقلب ويكون واحة في صحراء حياتها؟ أتراها كانت تبحث عن أشكال جديدة للحب في أحضان رجال ينتمون إلى مختلف البيئات والطبقات، أم أن كثير من نساء الطبقة الراقية في عصرنا هذا؟
مهما يكن من الأمر، فميسالين لم تكن مسخاً كما حاول بعض المؤرخين الأوروبيين أن يصورها مسايرة منه للمجتمع المرائي الذي يتعامى عن تهتك الرجل ويديم المرأة التي تخرج في مغامراتها العاطفية عن المألوف.
ولم يجد معاصرو ميسالين في دسها السم لنفر من عشاقها وفي دفعها نفراً آخر للانتحار، عملاً إذاً، لأن هذا الجنوح إلى الفتك بالرعايا غير المرغوب فيهم وبالعشاق بعد استنفاد عصارتهم، كان من مميزات الحكم المطلق في روما، ولا ننس أن عهد ميسالين وكلوديوس هو أحد العهود الذهبية، وإن العدالة كانت من مميزاته. فالبطش بالناس كان نسبياً في ذلك العهد، وليس معقولاً أن تكون بطلة هذه القصة مع ما عرفت به من عواطف متقدة وإحساس بالجمال، قد أمرت بسفك دماء الذين أحبوها إرواء لشهوة حيوانية.
