يحتوي كتاب "صيد الخاطر" لابن الجوزي على مجموعة من التأملات الحكيمة، والأفكار المتفردة، والخواطر السانحة، حيث يتحدث في كثير من فقرات الكتاب عن تجربته الخاصة، ونظراته في الكون والحياة والأحياء، وتأملاته في هذا الوجود. كما يستشف مشاعر نفسه، ليميط عنها اللثام بصدق عميق، ثم يناقشها مناقشة العالم الحاذق، وكأنها شيء منفصل عنه، ولم يغفل عن تقديم نصائحه الإرشادية من خلال تجاربه الشخصية في جميع علاقاته الاجتماعية. وقد تحدث ابن الجوزي في هذا الكتاب بأسلوب بين مشرق، يجمع بين لغة العقل وتأثير الوجدان، مع الدليل الساطع، والبرهان القاطع، فذكر بالموت وأوضح أن الدنيا فانية، ولكن لا رهبانية في الإسلام، وعلى المرء أن يتنبه إلى مداخل الشيطان، فيكون على حذر، لأن الاعتدال هو الأصل والمطلوب، أما الميل إلى الدنيا وحدها فمذموم، وترك التزوّد للآخرة مهلكة وخسران. من هنا كانت مجاهدة النفس، والصبر على لأواء الطريق، ومخالفة الهوى، والثبات أمام المصائب، أمور لا بد منها، وخلال ينبغي على المؤمن أن يتصف بها.
ولقد كانت موضوعات "صيد الخاطر"، قيمة، متنوعة، عميقة، فيها خواطر نفسية، غاص المؤلف من خلالها في قيعان النفس، فجاء بالدر الثمين، واللآلئ المختارة المنظومة، مما يجعل القارئ له يتعرف على البواعث والدوافع، ويدرك كنه الحقائق، فيرق قلبه، وتخشع نفسه، ويعمل بأوامر ربه سبحانه وتعالى. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى "يوسف علي بديوي" بتحقيق نصه وبإخراجه بحلة قشيبة، وعناية دقيقة، ليصل إلى القارئ بأيسر السبل، فيحد فيه مأموله المنشود. هذا وقد ألحق المحقق الكتاب برسالة له نفيسة معنونة بـ"لفته الكبد في نصيحة الولد" وهي أيضاً لابن الجوزي وما يجمع بين هاتين الرسالتين أنهما خلاصة تجارب المؤلف في أمور الدنيا، وأنهما كتبا بأسلوب واضح سهل.
