ظل ملوك مصر يحكمون شعباً متماسكاً، غير منقسم، في العصر القديم، لمدة تزيد على ثلاثة آلاف سنة متصلة. وقد تخللت تلك الفترة أحيان قليلة عمتها الفوضى السياسية وغياب الحكومة المركزية أو الاحتلال الأجنبي. بعد ذلك اندمجت مصر في نسيج العالم اليوناني الروماني. وفي هذا الكتاب يحاول الباحث إعطاء صورة للمجتمع المصري في إحدى فتراته المهمة التي اختارها من تلك الحقبة الطويلة من الحكم المركزي، هي منتصف عهد الأسرة الثامنة عشر (1500-1400ق.م تقريباً) وهي فترة تتميز بغزارة المعلومات المتوفرة عنها، مع وضع الضوابط اللازمة عند استخدام الدلائل لإزالة أسباب الخلط والنقص التي قد تشوبها.
يبدأ الباحث كتابه بدراسة المجتمع البيروقراطي الذي عاش في ظله هؤلاء الناس، ثم تلاه بدراسة للنظام القانوني وتطبيقاته ثم التدوين والكتابة وأوضاع الكتبة ثم استعرض ظروف السكان المعيشية في الريف والحضر وأساليبهم في تصريف شؤونهم اليومية وسوف يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب مفتاحاً للتعرف على أسلوب الحياة في مصر القديمة مما سيساعده على تعمق فهمه لحضارتها وتراثها الخالد خلود التاريخ.
