إن هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن مجموعة من الدراسات، كتبت في أوقات متفرقة، يجمعها همٌ واحد، وعندما قرر مؤلفها أن يجمعها في كتاب اختار لها عنواناً فجعله ثرياً، على طريقة تسمية الكل بإسم الجزء، وهي طريقة شائعة يختار فيها المؤلف أحد بحوثه المتميزة بعنوانها، او بمضمونها، او بأثرها الذي أحدثته وقت صدورها، وربما لأسباب أخرى يطول الحديث عنها، فيجعله عنواناً للكتاب، أو ثرياً تفتح مغاليق النص، وتكشف متاهاته، وتملأ فراغاته، وتتوزع في شقوقه، وقد قيل: "إن الكتاب يُعرّف من عنوانه"، ولكن هذه المقولة ليست صحيحة، دائماً، فبعض الكتب لا تُعرَف من عنوانها، بل تحتاج إلى أن تقرأها لتكتشف مغزاها، وهذا المغزى بدوره يمكن ان يتحول إلى عنوان يكشف عن التطابق بين العنوان والمعنون، وربما يكشف عن الإختلاف او التناقض، إذا ما شاء المؤلف أن يُغَلِّب لغة الإختلاف، وهي لغة ستكون ضرورية، لأنها صادمة ومحفزة وثرية، وستمنح للمرء الفرصة لأن يختلف مع ذاته، أو موضوعه، أو الآخرين.
ودلالة الديك والفيل، قد تعلق الأمر بعنوان الكتاب ومضمونه، إنما هي دلالة رمزية، فالأول رمز إسلامي يوقظ للصلاة، وينادي كل يوم: "سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة والروح"، وربما هو عند آخرين رمز القوة، والذكورة، والشموخ، والخُيَلاء، أما الثاني: فرمز عُرِفَ برسالته المشفّرة التي لم يستطع أبرهة الحبشي أن يفهمها، عندما أدار وجهه إلى غير الجهة التي أرادها الحبشي، وكان ما كان من قصة الطيور الأبابيل التي لم يفهمها (الحبشيون الجدد)، وهم يوجهون سهامهم نحو "بيت الله الحرام" بحجة أنه حجر، لا يختلف عن الأحجار التي حطمها الخليل إبراهيم عليه السلام، وحفيده محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وابن عمه علي رضي الله عنه.
