يطرح كتاب (المؤلف! المؤلف!) من إعداد الكاتب ريتشارد فندليتر عدداً من المسائل الجوهرية التي تتصل بمهنة المؤلف أو على الأصح تجارب عدد من المؤلفين والكتاب ومعاناتهم على مدى ما يقرب من قرن هي المدة من 1890 إلى 1984. ويعكس الكاتب تلك التجارب من خلال تناوله لمسيرة المجلة التي حمل الكتاب اسمها والتي توالى صدورها طوال المدة التي أشرنا إليها.
يشتمل الكتاب على خمسة عشر فصلاً وهو كما يصفه مؤلفه مجموعة من المقتطفات الأدبية تضمنت آراء عدد من الكتاب البارزين مثل برناردشو وبيزانت وأج جي ويلز، ممن عملوا بدأت محررين في المجلة المذكورة أو أشرفوا على تحريرها. ويسبق الفصول الخمسة عشر تمهيد ضاف لخص فيه المؤلف الخطوط العريضة لكتابه وضمنه تجربته الخاصة باعتباره رئيس التحرير الخاص للمجلة.
تتوزع المقالات التي احتوتها فصول الكتاب على محاور متنوعة تتصل بشكل أو بآخر بوضع المؤلف والتأليف والكتابة. ويختتم المؤلف كتابه بالفصل الخامس عشر وهو مقالة بصيغة رسالة تحمل عنوان (تحدي جدار الموت القديم) يقدم لها بالقول: (نختتم هذه المختارات بواحدة ن المساهمات المفضلة للمحرر. إنها جواب (جون وين) على دعوة للمشاركة في سلسلة كتابات أدبية عن موضوع (الكتابة في السبعينات) الذي ظهر على شكل رسالة إلى المحرر في شتاء عام 1972.
