لعل خير ترجمة في المصادر القديمة لأبي بكر القضاعي المعروف بابن الآبار، مصنف هذا الكتاب، هي تلك التي كتبها ابن عبد الملك المراكشي، حيث كان يدرك مكانته العلمية، إذ يقول في وصفه: "وكان آخر رجال الأندلس براعة واتقاناً، وتوسعاً في المعارف وافتناناً، محدثاُ مكثراً، ضابطاً عدلاً ثقة، ناقداً يقظاً، ذاكراً للتواريخ على تباين أغراضها، مستبحراً في علوم اللسان نحواً ولغة وأدباً بليغاً، شاعراً معلقاً مجيداً.
وقد شرح ابن الآبار في مقدمة كتابه طريقته في تأليف كتابه "تحفة القادم" فهو يترجم فيه لشعراء الأندلس الذي عاصروه: جيل الشيوخ الذين ماتوا قبل أن يولد ابن الآبار وأقدم هؤلاء وفاة حوالي 519 أو 520، جيل الذين ماتوا بعد ولادة ابن الآبار (أي بعد سنة 595) إلى تاريخ الانتهاء من تأليف كتابه هذا. وقد شرط المؤلف على نفسه ألا يترجم لمن تضمنته تصانيف السابقين من الأدباء، ولعله لم يخرج عن هذا الشرط إلا مرة واحدة حين ترجم لابن سعد الخير البلنسي، وهو من شعراء زاد المسافر، كما تعهد بإضافة الطارئين على الجزيرة من الغرباء أما سائر الشعراء الذين ترجم لهم فهم أندلسيون، وقد صرح ابن الآبار بأنه يحاكي من بن رشيق في تأليفه للأنموذج، وهذه المحاكاة إنما تتمثل في اقتصار كل مؤلف منها على شعراء بلده، ولكن للأنموذج أغزر أخباراً وأكثر توافراً على التقييم النقدي من تحفة القادم، إلا أن التحفة يتفوق كثيراً على زاد المسافر في الناحيتين المذكورتين... ويقول ابن الآبار انه حاول أن يتجنب السجع في كتابه، أما المعايير التي اتخذها في اختياره للشعر فهي روعة التشبيه، وجمال التشبيب وقد رتب الشعراء في كتابه بحسب الوفاة، ولم يخل بذلك إلا فيما ندر.
