يعد هذا الكتاب، الذي نشر بعد كتابته بأكثر من عشرين عاماً، واحداًمن اعظم الكتب في حقل اللسانيات التأريخية النشوئية، فهو يوجه هذه اللسانيات وجهة بنيوية خالصة، ويضبط العلاقات التطورية والنشوئية بدوال العنصر الثابتة، فيكشف عن القوانين الذي تتحكم بالتغيرات اللغوية، ونشوء العوائل اللغوية. لم يستعمل هيلمسليفف في هذا الكتاب بعضاً من المصطلحات الغلوسيماطيقية التي استعملها في كتبه الاخرى، لكنه اكتفى باستعمال ما يلزم من مفاهيم فكره اللساني الغلوسيماطيقي ولا سيما مفهوم دوال العنصر الجوهري في ضبط العلاقات بين اللغات ذات القرابة النشوئية. فيمثل هذا الكتاب تصور هيلمسليف البنيوي بين اللغات، وهو الموضوع الذي استبعده طغيان المنظور التزامني (السنكروني) في اللسانيات البنيوية، وأحياه هيلمسليف في هذا الكتاب.
