من المفارقات الغريبة-والكتاب مليء بالمفارقات! أن نقول عن الغربيين أنهم غير متدينين مع أنهم يكتبون عن الدين بعمق نافذ. ونقول عن الشرقيين أنهم متدينون مع أنهم يكتبون عن الدين والتدين بسطحية بالغة!.
وهذا كتاب يشهد بصحة هذا الرأي، فهو لا يكتب عن "تاريخ" التصوف، ولا يلتقط فقرة من هنا وفقرة من هناك مما قاله المتصوفة ليؤلف كتاباً غثاً يضيع معه وقت القارئ وجهده وماله، وإنما هو يقوم على مدى ثمانية فصول "بتشريح" ماهية التصوف بمبضع الفيلسوف الماهر البارع، ويثير أسئلة بالغة الأهمية حول هذا الحقل الخصب من الحياة الروحية. فبعد أن أثبت في كتب أخرى أن الحس الديني جزء أساسي في تكوين الإنسان، وأنه موجود بدرجات متفاوتة عند الناس جميعاً: مطموراً عند مَنْ يحاول أن يحجبه أو يمنعه م الظهور بل ربما يجحده وجوده-عارماً وطاغياً عند الصوفي العظيم الذي يرى الفعل الإلهي في كل حرك كونية من حبة الرمل في الصحراء إلى السمراء المرصعة بالنجوم، نراه في الكتاب الحالي يتابع المسيرة فيطرح الأسئلة المنطقية المترتبة على الحقيقة التي أثبتها: فإذا كان التدين يظهر في أعلى صورة عند الرجل الصوفي العظيم فما هي حقيقة التصوف؟، وما هي "التجربة الصوفية" التي تظهر في آداب الأمم المتحضرة في جميع العصور؟ وهل هناك "وجود روحي" أعظم من الإنسان يحاول الحس الديني العارم عند المتصوفة الوصول غليه؟ وإذا كان هناك مثل هذا "الوجود الروحي" فما هي علاقته بالإنسان وهل يمكن لنا أن نجد في التصوف أي توضيح لمشكلات مثل: طبيعة النفس (أو الذات)، وفلسفة المنطق، ووظائف اللغة، وحقيقة-أو عدم حقيقة-دعوى الإنسان في الخلود، وأخيراً طبيعة الإلزام الخلقي مصادره، ومشكلات الأخلاق بصفة عامة؟
