التقيته لأول مرة في النجف، في شهر حزيران من عام 1966، حين كنت طالباً أحضّر لشهادة الدكتوراه في الرياضيات في أميركا... والتقيته بالقاهرة عام 1979 حين أعداده لأطروحة الدكتوراه في الشريعة والقانون... وكنت من الداعمين لتأسيسه مركز أهل البيت في لندن...
كان أول مركز كبير ومهم يجمع العراقيين والمسلمين، كانوا جميعاً يتوافدون إلى هذا المركز حباً وإكراماً لراعيه السيد بحر العلوم، فاشتهر هذا المركز وأصبح محطة للقاء العراقيين من جميع المذاهب والمشارب السياسية، كان يملك وجوداً مضيئاً، وكان حضوره مهماً بالنسبة للحركة السياسية العراقية.
كان السيد بحر العلوم مدركاً لمسألة العلاقات مع الغرب من أجل تخليص الشعب العراقي من الديكتاتورية، أضف إلى ذلك، فهو وجه إسلامي معروف تتوفر فيه مقومات كثيرة ويمثل إتجاهاً جديداً بالنسبة للأميركيين، فوجوده ضروري لمصلحة العمل السياسي العراقي وتغيير الوضع القائم.
كان السيد بحر العلوم يتحسس من ذلك ويتسائل: كيف يمكنني الذهاب إلى أمريكا وأنا ابن النجف، ولدينا تاريخ سيء معها، فها التي تدعم نظام صدام وهي السبب في بقائه قائماً، وهم من تركوه لاحقاً بعد أن قاموا بضرب العراق، ولكنه من جانب آخر كان مؤمناً بضرورة العمل على كافة الأصعدة والمستويات لإسقاط النظام وعلى إستعداد أن يضحي بكل ما يملك ومن ضمنها سمعته من أجل إنقاذ هذا الشعب، وكان عارفاً بأن الكثير من الإنتقادات ستوجه إليه، ولكنه كان مقتنعاً بضرورة أن يتضح أمام هؤلاء في تلك البلاد بأن النجف ليست مكاناً لتشجيع الإرهاب، بل هي منبر الحضارة الإسلامية ومحور لتوحيد حركة الشعب العراقي نحو الخلاص من هذا النظام...
لقد خسر العراق خسارة كبيرة بفقده لشخصية جامعة قادرة على حل المشاكل ومحبوبة من الجميع، كان في أحلك الظروف إذا ما اتصل بأطراف متنازعة فإنهم يستمعون له، وهذا ما نحن بحاجة إليه الآن.
