توارث المصريون منذ عهد عبد الرحمن بن هرمز العناية الشديدة بتلقين القرآن الكريم ونشر علومه بين الصغار والكبار؛ فأسسوا الكتاتيب والمقارئ لتحفيظه وتقويم أدائه، وأكثروا منها في نواحيهم وخططهم، وكان يتولى أمر الإشراف على تلك المعاهد شيخ القرّاء والمقارئ. هذا وقد شغفت من زمن بتتبع آثار هذا المعلَم الإسلامي العظيم (المقارئ)، والتدوين لكل ما يتعلق به مما قد أتى عليه النسيان، أو طوي في بطون الكتب، فجمعت تاريخ نشأتها، وطرق إدارتها، ومناهج تعليمها، ومقرراتها الدراسية، وسبل الإنفاق عليها، في كتابي «مشيخة المقارئ المصرية في ماضيها وحاضرها»، ثم أفردت تراجم شيوخها على سبيل التوسّع والإطناب في كتابي «مرشد القاري إلى تراجم شيوخ عموم المقاري»، ثم نظمت أسمـاء شيوخها وترجمت لهم على سبيل الإيجاز والاختصار في هذا الكتاب الذي بين يديك، وبالله تعالى التوفيق.
