يبحث هذا الكتاب في موضوع من المواضيع الهامة التي تفتقر إلى مثله المكتبة الإسلامية، هو موضوع نقد المتن للروايات الحديثية، حيث من الضروري العناية بموضوعه، وإعمال المنهج الذي يتحدث عنه، إلى جانب منهج نقد الأسانيد، حتى لا يطغى جانب من جوانب النقد على الجانب الآخر.
وعليه، فإن الكتاب هو خلاصة رسالة للمستغلين بالحديث الشريف، أنجزه المؤلف قبل اثنين وثلاثين عاماً، وأقرّت بعض مباحثه في بعض الجامعات الإسلامية على طلاب الدراسات العليا.
وقد قام المؤلف بدراسة عدد من الروايات الحديثية التي توقف فيها بعض أهل العلم والدارسين ونقدوها من حيث المتن، فوجدها انها - حسْب منهج الأئمة في الإعلال - هي أحاديث معلولة، لذلك ألحق نماذج منها في آخر هذا الكتاب، لما لها من صلة بالموضوع.
وبناءً عليه، قسم البحث إلى تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة، "التمهيد"، الباب الأول: "الظواهر الموجبة لإعتماد نقد المتن"، الباب الثاني: "نقد المتن وإعتماده عند الصحابة وعلماء الحديث"، الباب الثالث: "معايير نقد المتن"، "الخاتمة".
