وجد كتاب الأغاني لأبي الفرج عناية خاصة من العلماء قديماً وحديثاً، فمن العلماء القدماء نجد إبن النديم يفرد في كتابة "الفهرست" حيزاً لمصنفات أبي الفرج، كما نجد الخطيب البغدادي (ت 463ه) يفرد ترجمة كاملة لأبي الفرج في سفره "تاريخ بغداد" وغيره من العلماء ولكن لم تكن دراستهم شاملة.
وبناءً على ذلك كان اختيار المؤلف لهذا الموضوع الذي اقتضت معالجة الدراسة فيه أن يقوم على ثلاثة أقسام وتسعة فصول، كان القسم الأول بمثابة مهاد للبحث، اشتمل على فصلين أحدهما تناول بالدراسة التأليف الأدبي ومصارده قبل عصر أبي الفرج، والآخر تناول عرضا عاما لكتاب الأغاني وطريقة التأليف فيه، ثم جاء القسم الثاني المتصل بمصادر أبي الفرج في دراسة الأدجباء على مختلف عصوره، وقد حوى هذا القسم ثلاثة فصول هي على الترتيب التاريخ، مصادره في الجاهليين والمخضرمين، فمصادره في الأدباء الأمويين وأخيرا في الأدباء العباسيين. ثم كان القسم الثالث والأخير من هذه الدراسة مركزاً على قيم هذه المصادر التي كشفت الدراسة عنها، وقد ضمّ هذا القسم أربعة فصول، جاء الفصل الأول في بيان قيمة هذه المصادر في دراسة الشعر والنثر، وقام الفصل الثاني من أجل بيان قيمتها في دراسة النقد الأدبي، وجاء الفصل الثالث كاشفا عن قيمة مصادر الأغاني في دراسة تاريخ الأدب العربي، وأخيرا جاء الفصل الرابع مستعرضا ومناقشا آراء القدماء والمعاصرين في هذه القيم، ثم ذيّلت هذه الأقسام الثلاثة بخاتمة أجملت فيها أهم ما تناولته الدراسة بأقسامها الثلاثة من إنجاز، مع إيراد أبرز النتائج التي خرج بها هذا العمل.
