في كتابه "نمو المفاهيم: تساؤلات وآراء في الوجود والقيم" يطمح الكاتب محمد علي إلى إزالة الغموض الفكري عن معنى المفاهيم، وعن العلاقة بينها وبين القيم، وكذلك بينها وبين الحياة الاجتماعية والتاريخ الروحي للإنسان ومدى تطوره. والدافع الأساس لهذه المحاولة هو: أن المفاهيم تؤثر في سلوك الأفراد والمجتمعات، وتصوغ رؤيتهم إلى وجودهم.. فإذا لم تكن واضحة، اضطربت هذه الرؤية وتشتت السلوك الفردي والجماعي.
أما المنهج الذي يستند إليه الكاتب فهو: منهج التحليل الثقافي، ويقوم هذا المنهج على أساسين: 1- البعد الثقافي: الذي يعني مجموع المفاهيم والقيم والرؤى والتصورات السائدة في المجتمع. 2- البعد اللغوي: باعتبار أن اللغة هي المنبع الذي تتدفق منه كل تلك الرؤى والتصورات. وفي هذا السياق يبدأ الكتاب بتعريف للمفهوم متطرفاً إلى العلاقة بين المفاهيم مثل: نمو المفاهيم، الشك واليقين، ما هو التاريخ؟، مفهوم التراث، الفرق بين الرؤية والموقف، عن الثقافة، ومكوناتها، ما هي التربية؟، القيم والسلوك اللغوي، المثقف والإيديولوجيا، الفرق بيت اللغة والأسلوب، مفهوم الوطن، الحس الإجتماعي في الشعر العربي، حول الغموض الشعري، القراءة والشباب. تلك هي المفاهيم التي يشرحها الكتاب.
يبقى أن نشير أن محتويات الكتاب هي: المحاضرات والأوراق النقدية التي قدمها الأستاذ محمد العلي للساحة الثقافية منذ ثمانينيات القرن العشرين وحتى الآن –زمن صدور الكتاب-.
