شكّل القرآن الكريم محور الحياة الفكرية والثقافية للمسلمين، فجهدوا منذ بداية القرن الأول للهجرة في جمع اللغة وتدوين مفرداتها للتواصل مع النص المقدس والوصول إلى الدلالات المعنوية فيه.
وإنطلاقاً من ذلك تبدّت الحاجة إلى توفر أدوات منهجية تيسِّر التعامل معه، فكان أن ظهرت المعجمات التي تضم بين دفتيها مفردات اللغة العربية إلى جانب معناها ليتمكن كل من غمُض عليه معنّى أو أشكلت عليه كلمة من تحقيق مراده وأخذ مطلوبه، وقد لجأت هذه الجهود إلى منهجيات مختلفة بغية الصول إلى هذه الغاية، كان أهمها ما اعتمده أحمد بن فارس في كتابه معجم مقاييس اللغة، حيث عمل على إرجاع الإشتقاقات إلى جذورها، إلا أن جهده كان يحتّم ضرورة وجوده منهج يوفر إمكانية إستكشاف المعاني المحورية لتلك الجذور.
ومن هنا ظهرت فكرة كتابنا هذا، الذي يعمل على إبراز المنهجية المعتمدة للوصول إلى هذه الغاية، وهو لا يكتفي بالجانب النظري، بل هو يجعل هذا الجانب مجرد مقدمة ينتقل بعدها إلى تطبيقات عملية من خلال مؤلفات اشتغلت على هذا الموضوع.
وتتميز الدراسة مضافاً إلى ذلك بتنوع المادة والأمثلة التي قدمت فيها، والتي تتناول موضوعات عقائدية وفقهية وأخلاقية، مما يجعل هذا الكتاب فريداً في بابه.
