لكن الدّين تحوّل، في أحيان كثيرة، إلى فتيل يشتعل بالكراهية والبغضاء، ويزرع الآلام والمآسي، بدلاً عن السلام والمحبة.
يتناول موضوع الكتاب شخصيّة جوزيف راتزينغر وفكره، ونظرته إلى الآخر المذهبيّ والديني، كيف يقيم الإنشقاق الكبير بين الكاثوليكيّة والبروتستانتيّة والأرثوذكسيّة؟ كيف ينظر إلى الإسلام والمسلمين؟ ما مصادر الصّورة التي بناها للإسلام؟ أَتجاوز راتزينغر النّظرة المسيحيّة القديمة إلى الإسلام، وما اصطبغت به من رفض وحقد وكراهية؟ أيتحمّل المسلمون مسؤوليّة الصّورة الحاصلة لراتزينغر عن الإسلام؟ أَأَوصل المسلمون الصّورة الصّادقة عن دينهم إلى الآخرين؟.
هذا الكتاب محاولة لإكتشاف الآخر، عسانا نعثر على أنفسنا هناك، من خلال فكر الكاردينال الألمانيّ جوزيف راتزينغر الذي أصبح البابا بنديكت السادس عشر.
