يحكي التاريخ القديم لشعب التيبت أن شيطانة، كانت تعيش بين الجبال في شمال الهند، تزوجت قرداً من غابات التيبت، فنشأ، من هذا الزواج، عرق شعب التيبت، فليس غريباً أن تسيطر "الميتافيزيقا" على جُل مروياتهم الشعبية وهم يفسرون نشأة الكون، ويعرّفون بتكوينهم، ويحكون عن "بوذا" وولادته وموته المعجزين، وعن تناسخ الأوراح وآدابه ومصادره، وعن علم الفلك والأبراج، والخرافات، والتعاليم الدينية، بما فيها عبادة الشياطين والأبالسة، وكل موجود في هذا العالم! والحكايات الاثنتان والخمسون القصيرة في هذه المجموعة رواها الناس في جلسات الشاي، وحول نار المواقد في مخيمات الجبال، وعلى الرغم من أنها مفعمة بمعتقداتهم الخرافية، إلا أنها تحوي نزعة ساخرة وتعاليم وحقائق أخلاقية غير متوقعة.
«.. واشترت أمها أرضاً زراعية صغيرة، وصارت لديهما ماشية كثيرة، وصارت لدى (بيتي) ملابس رائعة، ولم تعد مجبرة على رعي الماعز، لكن أيّاً كان الذي امتلكته، ومهما كانت فرحة وسعيدة، فإنه لم يكن هناك شيء يمنحها سعادة بحجم سعادتها حين رقصت مع سيدة الغابة، وكانت غالباً ما تذهب إلى غابة البتولا، إذ كانت تنجذب إلى هناك، وكانت تأمل بحظ كبير يجعلها ترى الفتاة الحسناء، لكن عينيها لم ترياها أبداً بعد ذلك». حكاية (سيدة الغابة) هذه، وغيرها من حكايات هذه المجموعة، وإن كانت عوالمها سحرية وعجائبية (فانتازيا)، إلا أنها لا تتخلى عن الواقع، بل تستعين بالخيال للتغلب على واقع قاسٍ ومعاند
