يهدف هذا الكتاب الى إيقاظ الكثيرين لحقيقة سياسية دولتنا في العراق. لقد صيغت هذه السياسة من قبل مجموعة من الراديكاليين المتنفذين الذين يسيطرون على السياسة الخارجية لإدارة بوش والذين استثمروا أحداث 9/11 لدفع مشروعهم المفضل قدماً.
إن فهمهم لكيفية بناء عراق جديد وأحداث السلام كان قاصراً ومتغطرساً الى حد كبير. وكانت النتيجة ورطة كلفت دولتنا الآلاف من الجنود وعشرات الملايين من الدولارات. في سياق الحديث عن الموت والخسارة الفادحة، أكاذيب بوش ومجلس وزرائه التي أخبرونا بها حول العراق لم تكن مراوغات ذكية في مناقشة برلمانية أو أخطاء إهمال من سكرتير تحرير ذكي، الكذب حول قضايا الدولة والحرب هو سوء استعمال للسلطة يتعذر تبريره ببساطة.
التأكيد الرئيسي في هذا الكتاب هو أن الكذب كان جوهر الطريقة المعتمدة للرئيس بوش ومستشاريه، لتسويق حرب كان عليهم أن لا يعتقدوا أن الشعب الأمريكي كان سيؤيدهم لو أنهم أخبروه الحقيقة. ولماذا قد يعتقدوا ذلك؟ أمر بسيط: اعتقدوا أن تأسيس نظام حكومة مرن في قلب الدولة العربية الغنية بالنفط سوف يكون ممثلاً لتوسع السلطة الأمريكية، وكذلك أيضاً سيقدم للحزب الجمهوري مفاخرات سياسية ضخمة وفرصاً مناسبة مفيدة لمصالحهم المشتركة التي تدعم وظائفهم وحملاتهم.
