برزت مشكلة المعنى كواحدة من أهمّ المشكلات التي حظيت بإهتمام كبير في النقاشات الفلسفية خلال القرن المنصرم.
وقد ساهمت في بروز هذه المشكلة التحوّلات التي حدثت في الفلسفة منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، عندما تمّ التخلّي عن الطريقة التقليدية في بناء المذاهب الفلسفية التركيبية إلى طرق ومناهج جديدة جاءت بتغييرات في طبيعة المشكلات والقضايا الأساسية التي تناقشها الفلسفة.
فمع بروز الفلسفة التحليلية وإزدهارها على أيدي الفلاسفة الإنكلّيز ومن سار في فلكهم، أصبحت اللّغة وتحليلها، لاحقاً، الشغل الشاغل للكثير من الفلاسفة المعاصرين من شتّى الإتّجاهات الفلسفية، فاحتلّت مشكلة المعنى صدارة النقاشات الفلسفية لما يترتّب عليها من قضايا أبرزها تحليل اللّغة، وتحديد قيم الصدق، والتصوّر الذي يطرحه بعض الفلاسفة للفلسفة وطبيعتها، إلى غير ذلك من أمور.
ويعدّ الفيلسوف النمساوي لودفيغ فيتغنشتاين أبرز الفلاسفة المعاصرين الذين شدّدوا على أهمية اللغة، حيث حصر وظيفة الفلسفة في تحليل اللّغة فقط، وكرّس كتاباته كلّها في هذا المجال.
وقد لاقت أفكاره إستجابة كبيرة من قبل العديد من الفلاسفة وبعض الإتجاهات الفلسفية، ومارس تأثيراً لا يستهان به في مرحلتي تفكيره الفلسفيتين الأولى والمتأخّرة.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب الصلة ما بين مشكلة المعنى وتصوّر فيتغنشتاين للفلسفة، وذلك في محاولة للإجابة عن السؤال عمّا إذا أثّر التحوّل الذي طرأ على أفكار فيتغنشتاين الفلسفية فيما يخص مفهومه للمعنى في تصوّره الذي طرحه للفلسفة في مرحلة تفكيره الفلسفي الأولى عنه في المتأخّرة منها.
وهذا بدوره سيبيّن الصلة من عدمها تجاه تصوّر الفيلسوف للمعنى، وصلته بتصوّره للفلسفة.
