للخيول خاصة العربية شهرة عالمية نظراً لدقة أعضائها وتناسق جسمها وجمال منظرها وسرعة حركتها، والحصان العربي حيوان مدلل يستخدم عادة للركوب. وقد اعتبرت الخيول العربية وما زالت رمزاً للجمال والقوة ومصدراً للتباهي عند أصحابها فقد ذكرت الخيول بالقرآن الكريم والأحاديث الشريفة وتغنى الشعراء بفتنتها ورسمها الرسامون العظام ونحتت أشكالها منذ العصور البابلية القديمة.
ولقد زخرت المصادر والكتب الأجنبية التي تهتم بالخيول، وزخرت المكتبة العربية بعدد لا بأس من الكتب التي تناولت دراسة أمراض الحيوانات الأخرى ولكنها ما زالت تفتقر إلى مصادر تتناول الأمراض المعدية والباطنة التي تصيب الخيول، لذلك يأتي هذا الكتاب ليكون في خدمة الباحثين وطلبة كليات الطب البيطري والمربين والهواة العرب في الوطن العربي.
يحتوي الكتاب على ثلاثة عشر فصلاً، الفصل الأول يتناول مقدمة عن الخيل، تسمية الخيول بالإضافة لمراحل تطور الخيول عبر التاريخ ويضم الفصل كذلك بعض الجوانب المهمة عن تربية الخيول وإدارتها وتغذيتها. ويتناول الفصل الثاني طريقة تقدير عمر الخيول وأمراض الأسنان. أما الفصل الثالث فيتطرق لموضوع مهم وهو أمراض الأمهار المختلفة. ويتناول الفصل الرابع الأمراض الحموية التي تصيب الخيول. وتناول الفصل الخامس الأمراض الجرثومية التي تصيب الخيول وتسبب هلاكها. ويتطرق الفصل السادس دراسة الأمراض المتسببة عن الريكتسيا. وتناول الفصل السابع الأمراض الفطرية التي تصيب الخيول وأهميتها. ويتناول الفصل الثامن الضرع بالأفراس وأمراضه. ويتطرق الفصل التاسع الأمراض الطفيلية المختلفة التي تصيب الخيول. وتناول الفصل العاشر أمراض الجهاز الهضمي. واهتم الفصل الحادي عشر بأمراض الجهاز التنفسي بالخيول واهتم الفصل الثاني عشر بأمراض الجهاز الحركي وتناول الفصل الأخير التكاثر بالخيول وأمراض الجهاز التناسلي.
