يرفض كواين الفصل بين الفلسفة والعلم لأن الفلسفة لا تختلف، في نظره، عن العلوم الخاصة إلا من حيث درجة العمومية، فبدل أن تهتم العلوم بوجود "البراق" مثلا تهتم بوجود الفئات والصفات. كما تعالج الفلسفة قضاياها من خلال اللغة باعتماد الارتقاء الدلالي من المادي إلى الصوري. لذا على الفيلسوف كما على الفزيائي أن يوضح قضاياه عن طريق إعادة بناء خطابه (معيار إعادة الصياغة). لكن يجب أن يسلم بعدم وجود أي إمكانية لبناء لغة صورية نموذجية، طالما أن المنطق لا يأتي بشيء جديد لا يوجد في اللغة الطبيعية، ومن تم يجب أن نعمل ضمن لغتنا، أي خطاطاتنا المفهومية، ونسعى إلى تحسينها لبلوغ مقاصدنا الإبيستيمولوجية والعلمية. من هذا المنطلق ستكون مهمة الفلسفة هي وصف الدوال التي تبنيها العلوم، خاصة المنطقية، من أجل مراجعة المفاهيم، حتى تستوفي بشكل أكثر فعالية الدوال التي تصفها الفلسفة. بعبارة أوجز، يجب تنقية القول العلمي من المواضيع المجردة وبالتالي من الكليات، ومن الدلالة ككائن مجرد، ومن المواضيع كحقائق واقعية، ومن الموجهات المنطقية؛ من أجل الإبقاء على الخطاطة المفهومية والمواضيعية، والالتزام الأنطلوجي وقيم المتغيرات أو السور الوجودي.
