إن بناء نظرية علمية والتثبت من صحتها بالطرق التجريبية يثير في الوقت ذاته موجات فكرية قريبة وبعيدة تبيّن ما يترتب على نتائجها من أفكار ومفاهيم ومنطلقات فلسفية جديدة. إذ أن العلاقة بين العلم والفلسفة قديمة، يثبت ذلك تأريخ تطور الفكر البشري، إذ كانت المحاولات العلمية الأولى ممزوجة بالفلسفة، ثم أخذت الفلسفة بنتائج العلم بعد أن انفصل عنها نتيجة لتطور المنهج العلمي، ولكنه بدأ يقترب من الفلسفة من جديد عندما أحس العلماء بضرورة التأمل وبناء نظرات عامة وشاملة. وفلسفة القرن العشرين تمثل بحق هذا الإتجاه الجديد.
ذلك أن العاصفة التي حلت بالعلم على مستوى الأسس الفكرية التي يستند إليها في مطلع القرن العشرين، والتي أفضت إلى أن الرسوخ المطلق للمبادىء العلمية لا يصمد إلى الأبد، وأن العلم في نهاية الأمر نشاط معرفي عملي تبقى عائديته إنسانية الملمح، وقابل للمراجعة والتقويم بشكل شامل، الأمر الذي فتح الباب ومهد الطريق لولوج فلسفة تقوم بهذه المهمة التخصصية للعلم.
ومن هذا المنطلق، تصبح مهمة فلسفة هذا العصر، هي محاولة فهم ظاهرة العلم فتبحث عن خصائصه ومقوماته والتنظيم الأمثل لمناهجه، ومحاولة حل (مشكلاته). وهذا ما يراه بعض أصحاب المدارس الفلسفية المعاصرة، الذين انبهروا بالتقدم العلمي فأرادوا للفسفة أن تكون علمية في خصائصها، أي أن تكون متخصصة بـ (فلسفة العلم)، أو أن يقتصر دور الفلسفة على تحليل لغة ومنطق العلم، أو متابعة لنتائج العلم.
وعلى وفق ما تقدم، وفي ضوء ذلك، كان الهدف من اختياري لـ (هانز ريشنباخ) أحد فلاسفة العلم المعاصرين الذين دافعوا عن العلم بوصفه أفضل وسيلة لاكتساب المعرفة محاولين الوقوف ومن خلال (تفكيره العلمي) على أهم المشكلات التي واجهت تقدم المعرفة العلمية.
