هذا الكتاب مختصر عن "بداية العابد وكفاية الزاهد" قصد منه مصنفه العلاّمة الفقيه عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله البعلي الحنبلي (1110-1192ه) تقريب فقه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل للمتدرجين في فقه الحنابلة بكلام قل لفظه وكثر معناه ومبناه، وهو أيضاً فائدة للعابد الذي يريد الإقتصار على العبادات وأحكامها لاشتماله على كتاب الطهارة والصلاة والجنائز والزكاة والصيام والحج والجهاد. بهذا يكون هذا المختصر مفيداً للطلبة المبتدئين، وتذكرة للعلماء المنتهين، وزاداً للعباد السالكين.
ولأهمية هذا الأثر عمل على تحقيقه الأستاذ محمد بن ناصر العجمي، فقدم له بترجمة عن المؤلف الإمام أحمد بن حنبل مع ثناء العلماء عليه، ووصف للمختصر واشتغاله فيه بالإستناد إلى نسختين أشار إليهما في "وصف النشخ المعتمدة في التحقيق" 1- النسخة الأولى: نسخة ضمن شرح المصنف لكتاب إبن حنبل "بداية العابد" المسمّى بـ بلوغ القاصد" وهي من المكتبة الأحمدية بحلب، و2- النسخة الثانية: من مكتبة خاصة في نجد وناسخها هو عبد الرحمن بن عثمان آل جلال. ولمزيد من الفائدة عمل العجمي / المحقق على نسخه وضبطه بالشكل، مع الإعتناء بعلامات الترقيم، ليكون كما أراد له مؤلفه زاداً للعابد، وبغية للزاهد.
