الكتاب هو الثالث في "فلسفة الفكر الديني بين الإسلام والمسيحية" حيث تم الانتهاء في هذا الجزء إلى الدراسة المقارنة بين علم الكلام وعلم اللاهوت. وقد تم في سياق الجزئين السابقين تتبع علم الكلام وعلم اللاهوت المسيحي في نشأتيهما والأطوار التي تعاقبت عليهما مع المقارنة بين الطرفين. كما تم البحث في المنزلة التي يُعترف لهما بها في جوّيها الثقافيين المختلفين، وتمت ملاحظة كيف نظّم كلاً منهما نظره إلى المسائل وتطور بها.
وفي هذا الجزء ينظر الشيخ صبحي الصالح الحال النهائية لكل منهما، وهي حالة علماً قائماً في بنيانه واستقلاله، فيحاول، بالمقارنة مع علم اللاهوت المسيحي، تبيُّن مشكلتي الماهية والمنهجية كيف تطرحان في علم التوحيد الإسلامي. هذا ولا بد لكل مشكلة تتعلق بالمنهجية العقدية من أن تنتظم حول قطبين رئيسيين. قطب أول، هو دور العقل والإيمان وقيمتهما في علاقات أحدهما بالآخر، أي بالتحديد ما يعالج من المفهومات العقدية، ولهذا الموضوع تم تخصيص الفصل الأول. ثم قطب ثانٍ، هو مضمون الأدلة المستخدمة وقيمتها وصحتها، أي "المدارك العقدية" واندراجها في حركة البحث الاستدلالي ذاتها، وسوف يكون هذا القطب محور البحث في الفصل الثاني.
ويتضح للقارئ خلال مباحث الكتاب بأجزائه الثلاثة، وخلال تعقيبات الشيخ الدكتور صبحي الصالح في هذا الجزء (الثالث) أنه بالإمكان التوصل إلى رسم الخطوط العريضة لمناهج الفكر الديني في الإسلام والمسيحية، من غير أن يشغل الجميع عن ذلك كله تفاوت ملحوظ في أسلوب البحث يرجع على الأغلب إلى شكليات المصطلحات والأسماء إلى جواهر الحقائق والمسميات.
