يعتبر كتاب "حول مبادئ نظرية اللغة" للساني الدنماركي لويس هيلمسلاف (1899- 1965) من المؤلفات الأساسية في اللسانيات المعاصرة، وعلى وجه الخصوص اللسانيات ذات التوجه البنيوي.
صدر هذا الكتاب باللغة الدنماركية تحت عنوان Omkring Sporgteoriens grundleggelese، سنة 1943، ومباشرة بعد صدوره، نشر اللساني الفرنسي أندري مارتيني عرضاً نقدياً مفصلاً عنه، ولعله المقال الذي لفت الإنتباه إليه منذ البداية، وفي سنة 1953 صدرت ترجمة باللغة الإنجليزية من إعداد الباحث الأمريكي فرنسيس وايتفيلد تحت عنوان Prolegomena to a theory of language.
وقد تم تنقيح هذه الترجمة في طبعة لاحقة بمراجعة المؤلف نفسه، ولم تصدر الترجمة الفرنسية الأولى إلا في سنة 1968 تحت عنوان prolégomènes à une théorie du langage، على الرغم من أنها كانت من أهم ما انشغل به هيلمسلاف منذ صدور الكتاب بلغة الأصلية.
وزيادة على تأخر صدور تلك الترجمة، فقد لاحظ الدارسون ضعفها مما دعا إلى إصدار ترجمة فرنسية ثانية سنة 1971 وهي المنتشرة الآن عبر المكتبات وفي طبعات عديدة، والآن يمكن أن نجد هذا الكتاب مع أعمال أخرى للمؤلف مترجمة إلى عدة لغات مثل الألمانية والإسبانية والبولونية والإيطالية، إلخ.
تحتل مؤلفات هيلمسلاف وعلى رأسها هذا الكتاب مكانة بالغة الأهمية في الفكر اللساني والسيميائي المعاصر، إلى درجة أنه من النادر أن نجد مؤلفات وبحوثاً تناقش الأسئلة اللسانية والسيميائية لا تحيل، بهذه الصورة أو تلك، إلى هذا الكتاب.
لقد حاول هيلمسلاف هنا أن يمهد لمشروعه العلمي "الغلوسيمية" كمشروع لساني وسيميائي وإبستيمولوجي في الوقت نفسه، فهو في هذا الكتاب يمهد لنظريته ويحاول بناءها ويضع الأسس الإبستيمولوجية التي تبرر تأسيسها.
لذلك نجد أغلب المحاولات البحثية، منذ منتصف القرن الماضي، التي تشتغل على الأسئلة الإبستيمولوجية المتعلقة باللسانيات والسيميائيات، تحيل على أعمال هيلمسلاف ولا تستطيع تجاهل مصطلحاته ومفاهيمه التي بدورها نجدها متجذرة في جميع القواميس المتخصصة في علوم اللغة.
