يضم الكتاب كتاب المعراج الذي وضعه أبو القاسم عبد الكريم من هوزن القششيري؛ صاحب الرسالة القشيرية في التصوف (ت 465هـ) بالإضافة إلى معراج أبي يزيد البسطامي لأبي القاسم العارف. وليس الغرض من نشر هذه الآداب الصوفية، البحث المستفيض والتعمق في الدرس، وإنما الغاية من ذلك عرض مادة جديدة في الموضوعات التي يدور حولها القول في التصوف الإسلامي، لتوجيه الأنظار، أثناء ذلك، إلى أهمية هذه الموضوعات ووجهات النظر فيها توجيهاً عاماً. وأهم من هذا من وراء نشر هذه الآداب الصوفية هو إحياء التراث الإسلامي المجيد، الذي بعث بمادته الفنية وأصالته، الروح العالية في نفوس الأدباء والشعراء والحكماء، الذين استلهموا منه أدبهم وفنهم وفيض صدورهم؛ وكان من آثاره ما وصل إلينا من أدب رفيع خالد، وفن وحكمة شرقية. والتصوف الإسلامي هو أحد هذه المنابع التي فاضت بالحكمة، والخيال، والتصوير، وألهمت الأدباء والشعراء والفلاسفة في صدر النهضة الإسلامية وفتحت لهم آفاقاً واسعة من التحليق في الخيال، ورققت من شعورهم، فأضافوا إلى التراث الإسلامي آداباً إنسانية خالدة، وفلسفة، وفنوناً رائعة. ومن أمثلته ذكر "قصة المعراج" التي تنشر لأول مرة فيها هذه الرسالة القيمة للإمام الصوفي: أبي القاسم القشيري، صاحب "الرسالة". فقد ردّد صداها فيا لشرق والغرب أهل النفوس الحية، والقلوب الصافية، وكانت أنموذجاً ومعيناً فياضاً، لفنون وآداب مذكورة، كما ستحيط مقدمة هذا الكتاب ببعض منه.
