إن آثار الحضارة العربية الإسلامية تحوي من الكنوز المعرفية ما لا تحويه حضارة من حضارات الأمم الأخرى، وعلى الرغم من الجهود الجبارة التي قام بها العلماء والمهتمون، وما يقومون به، من تحقيق لهذا التراث إلا أن الكثير من هذه الكنوز ما يزال رابضاً في مكتبات العالم ينتظر من المهتمين إخراجه إلى حيز الوجود.
ومن هذه المخطوطات الذي بقي لفترة طويلة هو كتاب أخبار الدولة المنقطعة لمؤلفه الشيخ جمال الدين أبو الحسن علي بن أبي المنصور ظافر بن الحسين الأزدي المتوفي 613ه / 1216م. ومع أن هذا المخطوط لم يصل إلينا كاملاً، إلا أنه من المتفق عليه أن ما يتميز به من دقة وتفرّد وشمول يجعله من المصادر التي لا غنى للمؤرخين عنها، فضلاً عن كونه مصدراً دقيقاً لفترة زمنية طويلة.
لقد جاء تصنيف هذا الكتاب على أساس الدول، فقد قسم منه وبقي الآخر، احتوى على الدولة العباسية والفاطمية والأخشيدية والطولونية والساجية والحمدانية والصنهاجية.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب، اعتنى بتحقيقه مجموعة من المحققين وهم د. عصام هزايمة، ومحمد محافظة، محمد طلعاني، علي عبابنه، ليخرج هذا الكتاب بصورته النهائية.
