هذا الكتاب "ذيل" على كتاب "كشف الظنون عن أسامي الكتب والفنون" وهو واحد من عشر ذيول أخرى للعلاّمة كاتب جلبي (حاج خليفة) وكان "جميل العظم" أحد الكتّاب الذين صنّفوا الكتاب وجعله تحت عنوان "السرّ المصون على كشف الظنون" ، الذي وصل إلينا - كما يقول - المحقق محمد خير رمضان يوسف - الحرفان الأولان (أ - ب) ، وفيه أكثر من ألف عنوان، أكثر من نصفها لا يوجد في "إيضاح المكنون". أما مقدمة المؤلف فنقرأ فيها: "... فهذا كتاب جعلته ذيلاً بكتاب "كشف الظنون" الذي ألفه الوزير العلاّمة منلا كاتب جلبي ... جمعت فيه أسماء الكتب والرسائل التي اطلعتُ عليها، والتي وقفتُ على أسمائها في تراجم أصحابها، وفي فهارس المكاتب العمومية، والمصنفات التي ذكرها المصنفون في أثناء العبارات ناقلين عنها، مما فات كاتب جلبي ذكره، وخلا عنه سِفْرُه. وقد أضفت إلى ذلك ما وقفت عليه أو بُلِّغتُ من أسماء الكتب التي صنفت بعد عصره إلى يومنا هذا في اللغات الشرقية ...".
ينقسم الكتاب إلى (مقدمة) في تعريف العلم وما يتعلق به على اختلاف المذاهب فيه و (فصول) منها في "موضوع العلم وبيان معنى المقدمة وتعريفها"، ومنها فصل في "أن أسماء العلوم والكتب هل هي أعلام جنسية أو شخصية؟" ، وفصل "في فضل العلم ومزيته وعلو رتبته" ، وفيما ورد "في فضل العلم من الآيات والأحاديث والآثار وما جاء في فضيلة العلم والتعلم" وفصل في "علم الله تعالى وعلم الأنبياء عليهم الصلاة والسلام" وفصل في "أصناف العلوم المتداولة واختصاصها بالملة الإسلامية": العلوم الحكمية والفلسفية، والعلوم النقلية الوضعية وعناوين أخرى ذات صلة.
