-كان المؤلف جان كازونوف قد أنهى كتابه "الفلسفة الحيوية" في فرنسا قبيل الحرب العالمية الثانية، ومضى إلى الحرب في عام 1939 وما لبث أن وقع أسيراً، أودع في الستالاغ عام 1940.
-وبدلاً من أن يصهره الحزن ويمتصّه ويقلق مثل غيره ويأسى لحاله، أخذ يوجه ملاحظاته النفسية إلى زملائه الأسرى وإلى نفسه، ويحلل مواقفهم وأساليب حياتهم في الأسر فكتب هذا الكتاب.
نال الكتاب جائزة جمعية رجال الأدب في فرنسا.
-يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب تحليلاً دقيقاً وملاحظات قيمة حول موضوعات شيقة كالألم واللذة والغريزة والجنس والحب العاطفي والكبت.
