ضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه دراسة أكاديمية تناولت (جامعة النجف الدينية)، المؤسسة التعليمية التي جمعت بين جوانب من نظام التعليم المدني الحديث والأساليب التقليدية للدراسة الدينية الحوزوية. وقد تتبعت الدراسة مسيرة هذه المؤسسة منذ افتتاحها في سنة 1382 هـ - 1962 م، ورصدت التطورات التاريخية التي مرت بها خلال أكثر من أربعة عقود من حياتها اتسمت غالباً بالانعكاسات السلبية للأنظمة السياسية التي حكمت العراق ليس عليها فحسب، بل على الدراسة الحوزوية في النجف بوجه عام.
وأبرزت هذه الدراسة جوانب التحديث التي تبنتها جامعة النجف الدينية لمفهوم المدرسة الدينية التقليدية والدراسة الحوزوية معاً، ونهج التجديد الذي اختطه لها مؤسسها العلامة السيد محمد الموسوي كلانتر (قد. س) في مناهجها، ونظامها التعليمي والإداري، وفي وظيفتها العلمية ومهمتها الاجتماعية والثقافية.
