يعرض الكتاب المجتمع المدني للإشكاليات المنبعثة عن محاولات فهم مصطلح المجتمع المدني والذي هو نتاج لعدة مصطلحات أو مفاهيم أخرى، إضافة إلى كونه مستقل عنها. لقد أحاطت بهذا المفهوم بعض الالتباسات وأخرجته من سياقه الأصلي، حتى أن هناك ارتياباً كبيراً في مجمل استعمالات مفهوم المجتمع المدني وهذا الكتاب يهدف بالدرجة الأولى إلى تفكيك تلك الارتيابات والإختلاطات.
إن المؤلف يذهب هنا إلى أن المجتمع المدني هو الحقيقة التي لم يتأكد إطلاقاً وجودها وهي فرضية حبلى بالمفارقات، وهو يبحث في السياقات التاريخية والنظرية التي أرست الأسس المكينة للمفهوم منطلقاً من عصر النهضة وعصر التنوير وقد حاول جاهداً أن يتتبع الأفكار الواردة في موضوع المجتمع المدني في كثير من الحقول الفكرية والمعرفية ليجمع في النهاية بين مجمل الأفكار المتداولة في الفكر الفلسفي والاجتماعي.
والكتاب يقع في سبعة فصول: تضمن الفصل الأول مقدمة تمهيدية للبحث في أوصل المجتمع المدني وانبعاث مفهوم المجتمع المدني، أما الفصل الثاني فخصص لأساطير التأسيس من حالة الطبيعية إلى التعاقد الاجتماعي. بينما تناول الفصل الثالث: المجتمع المدني في الإنثروبولوجيا الفركسونية وأسئلة الفكر الفركسوني، ومبحثاً حول تاريخ المجتمع المدني.
أما الفصل الرابع فيبحث في المجتمع المدني في الفلسفة الهيغلية والأسس الفلسفية للمفاهيم السياسية الهيغلية والنقد الهيغلي لنظرية التعاقد الاجتماعي. ويبحث الفصل الخامس في انهيار الحداثة أمام أساطير الحداثة وفي تعريف ماركس للمجتمع المدني. بينما خصص الفصل السادس لوظائف المجتمع المدني في النظرية النقدية، والمجتمع المدني عند هابرماس في حين خصص الفصل السابع والأخير لموضوع المجتمع المدني رؤى معاصرة تناول فيه المؤلف مطلب المجتمع المدني إزاء مستلزمات الحداثة، وأساطير المجتمع المدني، ونقد تيارات الكآبة السياسية وأسئلة ابستمولوجية حول استخدامات مفهوم المجتمع المدني وهي بمجملها استنتاجات وتساؤلات تفتح آفاقاً جديدة للبحث الجدي.
