البروفسور والناسك الروحي الأمريكي د. هوستن سميث، المرجع العلمي البارز على مستوى العالم في موضوع "أديان العالم"، ومؤلفات كتاب "أديان العالم" الأكثر رواجاً ومبيعاً يناقش الأزمة الروحية الحاضرة لإنسان عصر الحداثة. في هذه الدراسة النقدية يناقش البروفسور الأمريكي الصوفي المشرب والدكتور في الفلسفة ((هوستن سميث))- أستاذ الفلسفة وعلم الأديان في عدة جامعات أمريكية وصاحب كتاب ((أديان العالم)) The World's Religions الرائع والأكثر رواجاً- الأزمة الروحية الحاضرة لإنسان عصر الحداثة وما بعدها. ويقدم لنا دراسة نقدية فلسفية واجتماعية وعلم- نفسية وتاريخية تشرح ملامح تلك الأزمة، وما أنتجته من تصور مادي للعالم يُقلِّص وجود الإنسان، ويحرمه من كلّ أبعاده الروحية، وما يتبع ذلك من اختناق روحي وفقدان للأمل وسيطرة للمادية والفردية والاستهلاكية والعلمية والأنظمة القانونية المتنكرة للقيم الدينية والسياسات الحكومية المجردة من المبادئ الأخلاقية (خاصة في وطنه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية زعيمة الحضارة الغربية)، مُشبِّهاً ذلك "بنفق مظلم"، حبس فيه إنسان الحداثة الفاقد للإيمان. ويتتبَّع المؤلف- في الجزء الأول من الكتاب- الأسس الفكرية والفلسفية التي يستند إليها هذا المفهوم العلمي المادي للعالم، فيُفنِّدها تفنيداً علمياً غاية في الموضوعية، ليُقدِّم في الجزء الثاني من الكتاب مُؤيّدات التصوُّر الديني للعالم من خلال عدة فصول، يطرح فيها معلومات علمية وفلسفية غاية في الروعة، تدعم الإيمان بالله وبالروح وببقاء الوعي والحياة الشعورية بعد الموت. موضحاً القاسم المشترك بين أديان العالم الكبرى في هذا الصدد، داعياً - في مطلع الألفية الثالثة - إلى مجتمع تُحترَم فيه الروح الإنسانية، وتُشجّع لاستثمار إمكانياتها الرائعة كاملة، وتلتقي فيه القُوَّتان الأقوى في التاريخ (الدين والعلم)؛ ليحلَّا خلافاتهما، ويُرسيا أصول التعاون والعلاقة المتبادلة بينهما، ويستمرّ فيه الدين بلعب دوره، الذي لا غنى للبشرية عنه، بوصفه المصدر الحيوي الزاخر للحكمة الإنسانية والبوصلة الأخلاقية التي يجب أن تقود مسيرة حياتنا.
