شهد النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر اتجاهاً جديداً انبثق عن المذهب الرومانتيكي، وهو الاتجاه القومي في الموسيقى، فعندما تحرر الفرد من قيوده وشعر بكيانه مسايراً مبادئ الثورة الفرنسية، أخذت البلاد الصغيرة التي كانت تعيش على حافة الحضارة الأوروبية تشعر هي الأخرى بكيانها، وأخذت تكافح للتخلص من كل سيطرة أجنبية سواء كان هذا في الفن أو السياسة أو الثقافة.
ولجأ فنانو تلك البلاد إلى موضوعات القصص والخرافات والأغاني والرقصات الشعبية المتوارثة من جيل إلى جيل واتخذوا منها مادة خصبة يقيمون عليها أعمالهم الفنية الخالدة على الزمن.
وقد ظهرت إرهاصات القومية في الموسيقى في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر في أعمال مؤلف الموسيقى البولندي فريدريك شوبان، في البولونير والمازوركا، وفي أعمال مؤلف الموسيقى المجري فرانز ليست، في الرابسوديات الهنغارية، ولكنها تبلورت وظهرت واضحة أولاً في روسيا ثم في كل من بوهيميا وإسبانيا وبلاد اسكنديناوه وغيرها من البلاد الأوروبية. وفي الربيع الأول من القرن العشرين ظهرت القومية في الموسيقى المصرية، والتي كان رائدها يوسف جريس. يأتي الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته في هذا الإطار ليسلط مزيداً من الضوء على القومية في الموسيقى العالمية وفي الموسيقى المصرية المعاصرة.
