يتناول علم المصريات حضارة وادي النيل، وإذا كان مفهومه قد ارتبط بنشأة الكتابة، إلا أن هذا الإرتباط يبقى وجهاً من الوجوه في سياق التطور البشري المستمر، فالكتابة مقياس حضاري وكذلك الزراعة والعمارة وصناعة الأدوات.
فلا يمكننا دراسة مظاهر حضارة ما بمعزل عن جذورها في الماضي السحيق الذي يدخل في إطار علم ما قبل التاريخ، ويشكّل إختصاصاً قائماً بذاته متميزاً بما يمثله من مراحل زمنية طويلة تبدأ بالعصر الأيوليتي، فالعصر الحجري القديم وخواتيمه، ثم العصر الحجري الحديث، وعصر الحجر والنحاس الذي تشهد نهايته ما عرف بعصر ما قبل الأسرات ونشأة الكتابة وبداية التاريخ المصري.
ويشكّل عصر ما قبل الأسرات، أي فجر التاريخ، موضوع جدل بين علماء ما قبل التاريخ وعلماء المصريات، في حين يعتبره الأولون عصر ثقافات ما قبل "الأسر الفرعونية" تخضع دراستها لتقنيات هي أقرب إلى آثار عصور ما قبل التاريخ منها إلى آثار العصور التاريخية، يرى فيه الآخرون عصراً مطبوعاً بعلم المصريات.
وهذا المؤلَّف، وإن لم يكن فريداً في إختصاصه، عرض منهجي جامع للخطوط العامة لثقافات تلك المرحلة في مصر بدءاً بالعصر الأيوليتي وإنتهاء بعصر فجر الأسرات، يستند على ما حوته الكتب المرجعية المنبع لكل ما كتب في الموضوع إلى حينه، وعلى ما توصلت إليه الأبحاث والتقارير اللاحقة، ليكون مرتكزاً لدراسة المظاهر الحضارية في العصور التاريخية، ويستجيب لرغبة طلابي في أن أخرج محاضراتي في كتاب يكون في متناول أيديهم علّه يجيب على أسئلتهم حول منشأ تلك المظاهر وموطنها.
